The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is a framework established by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to assess and enhance the cybersecurity posture of its contractors. This framework is crucial for protecting controlled unclassified information (CUI) on contractor networks.
The parameters of CMMC have evolved significantly over the years. With 110 controls spread across 14 domains and 320 assessment objectives, working towards attaining CMMC Level 2 certification can seem overwhelming. Magna5 offers a personalized approach, consulting with each client to understand their specific needs and environment.
Originally, the DoD allowed contractors to perform self-assessments of their cybersecurity practices using NIST SP 800-171 and the DoD assessment methodology. However, recognizing the limitations and inconsistencies of this approach, the DoD opted to create a framework based on NIST 800-171 that also includes a certification process. Contractors will need to be evaluated by accredited CMMC Third Party Assessment Organizations (C3PAOs) before they can perform on contracts involving controlled unclassified information (CUI). While these assessments are not yet going on, industry experts expect CMMC requirements will begin appearing in DoD contracts as early as 2025. This shift will ensure a more standardized and reliable verification process, enhancing the overall security and integrity of the defense supply chain.
